The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The Call family served with the Royal Irish Regiment, which until 1881 was known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded in 1922. The British War medal was a campaign medal of the United Kingdom awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces for service in the First World War. Designed by W. McMillan, this silver medal depicts the head of King George V with the inscription GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP: (George 5th, King of all the Britons and Emperor of India). EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the British War Medal, awarded to Lieutenant Colonel F. Call during the First World War. The significance of this medal is heightened by its connection to the illustrious Call family, who have a remarkable history of military service dating back to the Peninsular War in 1807. The Royal Irish Regiment, formerly known as the 18th Regiment of Foot, was where members of the Call family served with honor and distinction. This regiment played a vital role in various conflicts until its disbandment in 1922. Designed by W. McMillan, this silver medal features an exquisite depiction of King George V on one side, accompanied by his title and imperial affiliations. The reverse side portrays a powerful image: a naked horseman armed with a short sword trampling upon the eagle shield representing the Central Powers. Symbolizing death are skull and crossbones near the shield while above them shines Victory's rising sun. The years 1914 and 1918 flank these symbols. The ribbon adorning this prestigious medal boasts a striking design with an orange vertical stripe at its center flanked by white, black, and blue stripes on either side. Preserved within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection alongside sixteen other campaign medals belonging to various members of the Call family, this photograph captures not only historical significance but also serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and bravery exhibited throughout generations past.
