1914-15 Star Medal, First World War 1914-1918
This medal was awarded to Captain F. Call. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The Call family served with the Royal Irish Regiment, which until 1881 was known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded in 1922. The 1914-15 Star was a campaign medal of the British Empire awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who served in any theatre of the First World War against the Central European Powers during 1914 and 1915. The medal was never awarded singly; recipients were also awarded the British War medal and the Victory medal. The medal is a bronze four pointed star, surmounted by a crown. The obverse has two crossed swords with the blades upwards and a wreath of oak leaves, with GV (King George V) at the bottom. An overlaying central scroll bears the inscription 1914-15. The reverse is inscribed with the recipients rank, name and regiment. The ribbon features vertical stripes of red, white and blue with the colours blended. TRURI : 1931.40.55

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the prestigious 1914-15 Star Medal, a symbol of bravery and sacrifice during the First World War. Awarded to Captain F. Call, this medal holds immense historical significance as one of the seventeen campaign medals bestowed upon members of the esteemed Call family. Spanning from the Peninsular War to the Great War, these medals represent generations of service with the Royal Irish Regiment. Formerly known as the 18th Regiment of Foot, this regiment played a vital role in defending British interests throughout its existence until disbandment in 1922. The 1914-15 Star Medal was specifically granted to officers and soldiers who valiantly served against Central European Powers during those initial years of conflict. It is important to note that this medal was never awarded alone; recipients were also honored with both the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Crafted from bronze, this star-shaped medal proudly displays two crossed swords atop an oak leaf wreath on its obverse side. King George V's initials (GV) are elegantly inscribed at its base alongside a central scroll bearing "1914-15". On its reverse side lies an inscription detailing recipient rank, name, and regiment. Accompanied by a ribbon featuring blended vertical stripes in red, white, and blue hues representing courage and unity, this remarkable artifact now finds itself preserved within our museum collection thanks to MIke Searle's stunning photography skills.
