EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the vibrant and enigmatic Red Bird-of-Paradise, Paradisaea rubra. The Red Bird-of-Paradise is a native of New Guinea and the surrounding islands in the Pacific. Known for their elaborate courtship displays, these birds are famous among ornithologists and natural history enthusiasts. The illustration is after a work by the renowned French natural history artist Rene-Primevere Lesson (1807-1888). Lesson was a prolific artist who produced numerous illustrations for various natural history publications throughout the 19th century. This particular work was produced for Georg Friedrich Treitschke's Gallery of Natural History, Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, in Leipzig, Germany, in 1840. The Red Bird-of-Paradise is depicted in all its resplendent glory, with its iridescent red plumage, long, curved beak, and distinctive elongated, wires-like feathers on its back. These feathers are used in the bird's elaborate courtship display, where the male dances in the air, fluttering his wings and shaking his tail feathers to attract a mate. The handcolouring adds an additional layer of detail and beauty to the illustration, bringing out the intricacies of the bird's plumage and making each feather seem to shimmer and glow. The background is kept simple, allowing the Red Bird-of-Paradise to take centre stage and captivate the viewer's attention. This exquisite work of art is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the skill of the artist and the printers who brought it to life. It remains an important historical record of the Red Bird-of-Paradise and a work of art in its own right, inspiring awe and wonder in all who behold it.
