EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Greater Bird-of-Paradise (Paradisaea apoda) in its natural habitat, surrounded by the tall, slender stems of papyrus grass (Cyperus papyrus). The Greater Bird-of-Paradise is a native of New Guinea and the surrounding islands in the Pacific. Known for their elaborate plumage and unique mating displays, these birds are a favorite subject of ornithologists and zoologists. The engraving is based on an illustration by Adolphe Fries, which was published in the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) by Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville. The work, which was published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, was a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated natural history reference book. The Greater Bird-of-Paradise is shown perched gracefully on a branch, its long, curved tail feathers spread out behind it. The male bird's vibrant, iridescent plumage is on full display, with its blue-green back, red chest, and long, white wing feathers. The female, which is less colorful, is shown in the background, blending in with the papyrus grass. The papyrus grass, which is native to tropical and subtropical regions, provides the perfect backdrop for this stunning bird. The tall, thin stems of the grass are a striking contrast to the bold colors and intricate patterns of the Greater Bird-of-Paradise's feathers. The handcolouring adds an extra layer of detail and depth to the engraving, making it a true work of art. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and a reminder of the important role that natural history reference books played in advancing our understanding of the natural world in the 19th century.
