EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph captures the striking beauty and intricate plumage of two remarkable avian species, the Emperor Bird-of-Paradise (Paradisaea guilielm) and the King Bird-of-Paradise (Cicinnurus regius). The image is based on the meticulous observations and illustrations of Jean Baptiste Audebert, a renowned French naturalist, and was produced by the skilled hand of the Dutch lithographer, Burggraaf, for the comprehensive ornithological work, "Oeuvres Completes de Buffon," published in Brussels in 1837. The Emperor Bird-of-Paradise, with its vibrant green and blue plumage, is depicted in full regal splendour, displaying its elongated, iridescent quills. This bird is native to New Guinea and the surrounding islands, and is known for its elaborate courtship displays, which involve the male spreading its elaborate train feathers to attract a mate. The King Bird-of-Paradise, on the other hand, is shown in its more subdued, yet still resplendent, non-breeding plumage. This bird is native to the eastern half of New Guinea and is characterized by its long, curved, downward-pointing beak and its distinctive, fan-shaped tail. The King Bird-of-Paradise is also known for its elaborate courtship displays, which involve the male performing acrobatic flights and offering food to the female. This image provides a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the avian world and serves as a testament to the dedication and skill of the naturalists and artists of the past who documented these remarkable creatures for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
