Grape vine stem, light micrograph
Grape vine stem. Polarised light micrograph of a cross-section through a young stem from the grape vine (Vitis vinifera). Most of the stem is a large central pith made up of parenchyma tissue (blue). Below the outer epidermis layer is a thin cortex with supporting fibres (yellow patches). Between the cortex and pith is a ring of vascular bundles broken up by medullary rays (black) that flexibility for this climbing stem. Within the vascular layers is an outer layer of phloem (light blue) and an inner xylem layer (yellow and red). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a cross-section of a young grape vine stem, revealing its intricate cellular structure under polarised light. The central pith, depicted in striking blue hues, dominates most of the stem and consists of parenchyma tissue. Surrounding the pith is a thin cortex layer adorned with patches of yellow representing supporting fibres. The vascular bundles, responsible for water and nutrient transport within the plant, are arranged in a ring between the cortex and pith. These bundles are interrupted by medullary rays shown in black, which provide flexibility to this climbing stem. Delving deeper into the vascular layers, we encounter an outer layer of phloem depicted in light blue tones. This vital tissue transports organic nutrients produced during photosynthesis throughout the plant. Adjacent to it lies the inner xylem layer portrayed through vibrant shades of yellow and red. Xylem plays a crucial role in conducting water and minerals from roots to other parts of the vine. With a magnification level of x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across, this mesmerizing image allows us to appreciate nature's intricate design on both macroscopic and microscopic levels. It serves as a testament to botanical wonders while providing valuable insights into grapevine biology for researchers and enthusiasts alike.
