Cowbridge Market - A scene in the cattle market at Cowbridge
Cowbridge Market - A scene in the cattle market at Cowbridge. South Wales last remaining cattle market is facing closure, after more than 200 years of farming business. Cowbridge Cattle Market, which has been a focal point for South Wales farmers for at least two centuries, is due to close at the end of the month after negotiations over a new lease for the site ended without agreement. The announcement that negotiations on a new lease had failed was made by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, which owns the site. 27th July 1964

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a poignant scene at Cowbridge Market, the last remaining cattle market in South Wales. For over two centuries, this bustling marketplace has been a vital hub for farmers in the region. However, its future hangs in the balance as negotiations for a new lease have reached an impasse. The Vale of Glamorgan Council, which owns the site, recently announced that the market is set to close by month's end. Taken on July 27th, 1964, this snapshot showcases a moment frozen in time. Cattle fill the ring as farmers and buyers gather around to assess their quality and strike deals. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation and livelihoods are at stake. The image serves as a reminder of how deeply rooted agriculture is within our history and culture. It symbolizes not only economic activity but also community ties forged through generations of farming traditions. As we reflect upon this photograph today, it becomes evident that change is inevitable even in places steeped in tradition. While progress may bring advancements elsewhere, it often comes at the cost of losing cherished institutions like Cowbridge Market. Alan Grist's lens immortalizes both the vibrancy and uncertainty surrounding this iconic cattle market during its twilight years – capturing not just livestock but also emotions tied to an uncertain future for South Wales' farming community.
