HMS Thunderer: A Glimpse into Naval History at Dagenham, Essex (circa 1911) This evocative photograph captures the majestic presence of HMS Thunderer, the third Orion-class battleship built for the Royal Navy and the last vessel to be constructed by Thames Ironworks. Launched in 1911, HMS Thunderer was the largest warship ever built on the River Thames, marking the end of an era for the historic shipbuilding site. The image portrays HMS Thunderer at Dagenham, Essex, before her trials. The ship's imposing silhouette is dwarfed by the crane towering above, a testament to the engineering prowess required to construct such a colossal vessel. The Orion-class battleships were renowned for their advanced features, including oil-fired boilers and a main armament of ten 12-inch guns. Sadly, after the completion of HMS Thunderer, Thames Ironworks declared bankruptcy, leaving the ship's construction unfinished. Despite this setback, the Royal Navy recognized the importance of the vessel and took ownership, completing her at another yard. HMS Thunderer went on to serve in the First World War, playing a crucial role in the Battle of Jutland in 1916. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into naval history, showcasing the grandeur and scale of HMS Thunderer as she stood proudly at Dagenham, Essex, before embarking on her illustrious military career.
