Woman Standing among the Friars (recto), c. 1770-1775. Creator: John Brown (British, 1752-1787)
Woman Standing among the Friars (recto), c. 1770-1775. A beguiling artist with a brief career, Brown is known for a small group of monochromatic drawings imbued with sinister overtones. At the age of 20, the Scottish artist traveled to Italy where he spent the next 12 years. This drawing exemplifies his Roman street scenes which often depict women dressed in spectacular, billowing costumes. Here, a coquette with bare ankles and plunging decolletage is surrounded by a crowd of vulgar types who leer, ogle, judge, and scorn. The reverse of the sketchbook sheet includes two independent drawings: a study of faces in fierce and intense expressions, and a pair of women wearing swirling gowns. One figure raises her hand in a mysterious gesture that casts a shadow on her throat resembling a claw. Whether the viewer is being beckoned or forewarned remains a mystery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artwork titled "Woman Standing among the Friars (recto), c. 1770-1775" by John Brown, a talented British artist who had a short but remarkable career. Brown's unique style is characterized by monochromatic drawings that possess an eerie and unsettling quality. At just 20 years old, Brown embarked on a journey to Italy where he resided for the next twelve years, greatly influenced by the vibrant Roman street scenes he encountered. This particular drawing exemplifies his fascination with these scenes, often featuring women adorned in extravagant costumes that billow around them. In this image, we see a seductive woman standing amidst a crowd of coarse individuals who leer at her with judgment and scorn. Her attire reveals bare ankles and plunging decolletage, adding to her allure while simultaneously inviting criticism from those around her. On the reverse side of this sketchbook sheet are two independent drawings: one depicting intense facial expressions and another showcasing two women donning swirling gowns. One of these figures raises her hand in an enigmatic gesture that casts an ominous shadow resembling a claw on her throat. The true meaning behind these images remains shrouded in mystery; it is unclear whether they beckon or forewarn the viewer. Nevertheless, John Brown's talent shines through in this thought-provoking piece which combines graphite and gray and black wash with point of brush techniques. This exquisite print is part of The Cleveland Museum of Art collection curated by Heritage Art/Heritage Images. "
