Landscape, late 1500s-early 1600s. These two paintings belong to a group of eight that were likely mounted as a pair of four-panel folding screens representing the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers. The screen was the property of the Date family, who once ruled Sendai in northern Honshu, the main Japanese island. The paintings were separated after the Date family sold them. These two represent these themes: sunset glow over a fishing village and returning sails off a distant shore, and are in the style of Chinese painter Li Tang (1050-1130). Some scholars believe they are the work of Sesshu Toyo (1420-1506), one of the most famous Japanese painters, or by one of his disciples. Sesshu traveled to Ming dynasty China on a ship sent by the powerful Ouchi family of Yamaguchi at the southern tip of Honshu. This gave him the distinction of being the only Japanese painter of the Muromachi period to have experienced Ming China firsthand

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning landscape from the late 1500s to early 1600s, created by Sesshū Tōyō, a renowned Japanese painter. Believed to be part of a set of four-panel folding screens representing the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, these two paintings are now separated after being sold by the Date family, who once ruled Sendai in northern Honshu. The first painting depicts a mesmerizing sunset glow over a charming fishing village, casting warm hues across the serene waters. The second artwork portrays returning sails off a distant shore, evoking feelings of anticipation and tranquility. Both pieces bear influences from Chinese painter Li Tang (1050-1130), reflecting an amalgamation of artistic styles. Sesshū Toyo is considered one of Japan's most celebrated painters and is believed to have either created these works himself or had his disciples contribute to their creation. Notably, Sesshū embarked on an extraordinary journey to Ming dynasty China aboard a ship sponsored by the influential Ouchi family. This unique experience made him the sole Japanese artist during the Muromachi period to witness firsthand the artistry and culture of Ming China. Preserved through time with exceptional detail and precision, this print allows us to appreciate Sesshū Tōyō's mastery while immersing ourselves in ancient landscapes that continue to captivate viewers today.
