EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "On picket at the river bank, 1876" by Edwin Austin Forbes takes us back in time to a significant period in American history. Created during Forbes' travels with the Union Army from 1862-1865, this etching offers a glimpse into life on the frontlines of the Civil War. The print consists of three distinct images, each capturing different aspects of wartime experiences. The upper left image portrays a solitary soldier standing next to towering trees along the riverbank. It evokes a sense of tranquility amidst chaos, highlighting moments of respite and reflection for those serving their country. Moving to the upper right image, we are transported to an old sawmill bustling with activity. Several wagons surround it, suggesting logistical operations crucial for supporting troops on the battlefield. Although devoid of human presence, this scene speaks volumes about the behind-the-scenes efforts that sustained soldiers during war. Finally, we are presented with a poignant depiction in the bottom image titled "Waiting for Something to Show Up". Set behind breastworks during a lull in battle, soldiers can be seen resting under tents or seeking shade under trees and houses. A lookout perched high up in a tree serves as their first line of defense against any enemy approach. Edwin Austin Forbes masterfully captures these snapshots from his firsthand experiences as part of an esteemed group known as the French Etching Club. Through this remarkable etching series held within Gilder Lehrman Collection's archives in New York City, we gain insight into both mundane and extraordinary moments that shaped America's past.
