EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless charm of The Sloop Inn, nestled in the picturesque town of St Ives, Cornwall. Taken around the 1930s, it offers a glimpse into the past with its general view showcasing a cart adorned with milk churn outside this historic establishment. A distinguished gentleman stands proudly outside, perhaps enjoying a moment of respite or engaging in lively conversation with passersby. This gentleman could be none other than Samuel Rogers himself, the esteemed landlord who presided over The Sloop Inn during this era. Dating back to "circa 1312". The Sloop Inn holds an illustrious place among Cornwall's oldest inns. While the present building was constructed in either the 17th or 18th century, its granite rubble walls and slate roof exude an air of authenticity that transports visitors back through centuries of history. Renowned for its association with Victorian artists like Louis Grier, The Sloop Inn has long been an artistic haven. Many of Grier's masterpieces once graced these very walls, adding to the inn's allure and providing inspiration for generations to come. Preserved on this magic lantern slide by an unknown photographer, this image evokes nostalgia and invites us to imagine ourselves strolling along St Ives' wharf during a bygone era. It is a testament to both enduring traditions and ever-evolving landscapes that make Cornwall such a beloved destination.
