In the winter of 1946 - 1947 the UK experienced several cold spells
In the winter of 1946 - 1947 the UK experienced several cold spells, beginning on 21 January 1947, bringing large drifts of snow to the country, which blocked roads and railways. Coal supplies, already low following the Second World War, struggled to get through to power stations and many stations were forced to shut down or generate at a lower level for the lack of fuel. The Attlee government introduced several measures to cut power consumption, including restricting domestic electricity to 19 hours per day and reducing industrial supplies.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the midst of a harsh winter in 1946-1947, the United Kingdom faced an unprecedented series of cold spells that brought about immense challenges for its people. This print captures a poignant moment during this time, showcasing the resilience and camaraderie of Londoners amidst adversity. The image transports us to a quaint City of London cafe on the 10th of February 1947. As darkness enveloped the city due to power cuts, patrons gathered around candlelit tables, finding solace in each other's company. Tea became their warm companion as they navigated through these challenging times with unwavering spirit. During this period, coal supplies were scarce following World War II, exacerbating fuel shortages and forcing power stations to reduce operations or shut down entirely. To conserve electricity consumption, the Attlee government implemented strict measures such as limiting domestic electricity usage to only 19 hours per day. In this intimate setting captured by Thomson Topix's lens, we witness not only individuals seeking warmth but also friendship blossoming amidst shared struggles. The atmosphere is one filled with resilience and determination as Londoners adapt to life without modern conveniences. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit that prevailed even in times of hardship. It reminds us how communities can come together under trying circumstances and find comfort in simple pleasures like tea by candlelight.
