The toll gate keeper, one of the characters in the Rebecca Riots Pageant
The toll gate keeper, one of the characters in the Rebecca Riots Pageant, stage at Efailwen Gate. February 1965. The pageant celebrates the attacks of 1839 on the tollgate at Efailwen which was destroyed and the tollhouse set on fire. It is unknown, to this day, who perpetrated this act of destruction, as those who took part had blackened faces and a number wore women clothes. This was the second time in as many months, that the tollgate and house at Efailwen had been attacked. These incidents marked the start of a series of events which spread to many communities in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, known as the Rebecca Riots

EDITORS COMMENTS
The toll gate keeper stands tall, his top hat perched upon his head, as he takes center stage in the Rebecca Riots Pageant. This print captures a moment frozen in time - February 1965 at Efailwen Gate. The pageant itself commemorates the audacious attacks of 1839 on the tollgate at Efailwen, where destruction and chaos reigned supreme. The tollhouse was set ablaze, leaving behind a mystery that still remains unsolved to this day. Those responsible for this act of rebellion wore blackened faces and some even donned women's clothing, their identities forever concealed. Efailwen Gate became the epicenter of these tumultuous events, as it faced its second attack within just two months. These incidents marked the beginning of what would later be known as the infamous Rebecca Riots - a wave of unrest that swept through Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. In this remarkable image from the 1960s, we witness not only history but also tradition come alive before our eyes. Men dressed in elaborate costumes and hats transport us back to an era long gone by. This photograph is more than just a visual spectacle; it serves as a testament to Wales' rich heritage and political struggles. It reminds us that even amidst darkness and uncertainty, there are those who dare to challenge authority and fight for justice.
