EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created in 1816, showcases two intriguing mammal species from the natural world: the Sloth Bear (Ursus ursinus) and the Hog Badger (Arctonyx collaris). The image, taken from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, was illustrated by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Plee, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, with publication by F.G. Levrault. The Sloth Bear, a vulnerable species, is depicted on the left side of the print. Known for its long, curved claws and shaggy coat, this bear is native to the forests of South Asia. Its slow movements and adaptations to feeding on tree-dwelling insects and fruits earned it the name 'sloth bear.' On the right side of the print lies the Hog Badger, a near-threatened species. This powerful, omnivorous animal is characterized by its strong snout, short legs, and distinctive stripes. Native to Southeast Asia, the Hog Badger is an agile and elusive creature, often found in dense forests and grasslands. The intricate details of these animals, captured in this historical print, serve as a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the time. The use of handcoloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the engraving, making it a captivating piece of natural history.
