EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a hand-colored copperplate engraving of the Woman of Argo 1 and Mycene (Mycenae) 2, taken from Francois Pouqueville's Travels through More, Albania and several other parts of the Ottoman Empire, published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. The illustration, created by Dell Acqua and hand-colored by Lazaretti, showcases two significant sites in the Peloponnese region of Greece: the ancient city of Mycene and the mythological ship, Argo 1. Mycene, depicted on the left side of the print, is an ancient Greek city located in the Argolis Plain in the Peloponnese. Mycene is renowned for its rich archaeological site, which includes the Lion Gate, the Cyclopean Walls, and the Treasury of Atreus. The city was a major center of power during the Mycenaean civilization, around 1600-1100 BC. On the right side of the image, the mythological ship, Argo 1, is shown with its sails unfurled, ready to embark on its legendary journey. According to Greek mythology, Argo 1 was the ship that carried the Argonauts, led by Jason, on their quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece. This iconic image of the Woman of Argo 1 and Mycene (Mycenae) 2 not only showcases the historical and mythological significance of these sites but also highlights the artistic mastery of the engraver and the colorist.
