Carehome Emigrate Islington Orphanage Orphans Preparing Services Strays Technical Trunks Waifs Welfare 1907 Childrens
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in the lives of a group of boys from the Islington Technical Home as they prepare to emigrate on 7th June, 1907. Run by the Waifs and Strays Society, the home provided care and welfare services for orphaned and destitute children in London. In this image, the boys, some with large trunks at their feet, appear determined and resolute as they bid farewell to their temporary home. The Waifs and Strays Society facilitated the emigration of over 12,000 children between 1883 and 1939, providing them with a new start in life in countries such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The boys in this photograph, with their hopeful gazes and heavy trunks, embody the courage and resilience of the thousands of children who left their old lives behind to embark on a new journey. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the vital role that children's care homes and welfare services play in shaping the lives of vulnerable children, giving them the support and opportunities they need to thrive.
