Woodgate's military career spanned over four decades, during which he served in various capacities in India, South Africa, and Sudan. Born on March 2, 1845, in County Down, Ireland, Woodgate joined the British Army in 1862 as an ensign in the Royal Irish Rifles. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a brave and capable leader. In 1879, he led his troops in the Anglo-Zulu War, where he played a crucial role in the Battle of Ulundi, which marked the end of the Zulu Kingdom's resistance against British rule. In 1884, Woodgate was appointed as the commander of the Sudanese contingent in the Anglo-Egyptian army during the Mahdist War. He led his troops in several significant battles, including the Battle of El Obeid and the Battle of Ginnis.
