Olivia de Havilland (b.1916), American actress, c1930s-c1940s. De Havilland made her stage debut in 1935 as Hermia in A Midsummer Nights Dream; the following year she made her film debut in the same role. Soon afterwards, she was signed to a seven-year contract by Warner Bros. where she starred as a sweetly beautiful romantic heroine, often opposite Errol Flynn, in films such as Captain Blood (1935), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) and The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939). She won two Best Actress Academy Awards - for To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949) - and received a further three nominations - one of which was for Gone With the Wind (1939). Her sister is the actress Joan Fontaine
