EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Florence Nightingale, an iconic figure in the history of nursing and hospital reform. Born in Italy but named after the city of her birth, Nightingale dedicated her life to caring for the sick and suffering. In this portrait from the 1850s, she exudes strength and determination. During the Crimean War (1854-1856), Nightingale volunteered for duty and was stationed at Scutari's hospital barracks. It was here that she implemented strict discipline and high standards of sanitation, leading to a drastic reduction in mortality rates. Her tireless efforts earned her the nickname "Lady with the Lamp" as she would make nightly rounds attending to wounded soldiers. In addition to her practical contributions on the battlefield, Nightingale made significant advancements in nursing education. In 1861, she founded St Thomass School of Nursing in London, laying down foundations for professional training that are still followed today. This monochrome image encapsulates not only Nightingale's pioneering spirit but also represents a pivotal moment in medical history when women like her began breaking barriers within a male-dominated field. As we gaze upon this portrait, we are reminded of Florence Nightingale's unwavering dedication to improving healthcare practices and forever changing our perception of what it means to be a nurse.
