Aquarius constellations. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, and was based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 22, showing the constellations of Aquarius, Capricornus, Piscis Austrinus (southern fish), and Globus Aerostaticus (hot air balloon)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Aquarius constellations as depicted in a 19th-century celestial atlas. Created by Kornelius Reissig, an esteemed Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences, this artwork represents a significant milestone in Russian star cartography. The atlas, titled "Presentation of constellations in 30 tables" was based on earlier works by Bode and Flamsteed. Plate 22 of this historical masterpiece reveals not only the Aquarius constellation but also Capricornus, Piscis Austrinus (southern fish), and even Globus Aerostaticus (hot air balloon). Each constellation is meticulously labeled using Cyrillic characters and represented through mythological figures and animals. The black background adds depth to the intricate gold leaf illustrations that adorn this celestial map. Punched holes mark each star's position with precision coordinates, allowing astronomers to navigate the night sky accurately. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of astronomical history, we are transported back to a time when scientific knowledge merged seamlessly with artistic expression. This artwork serves as a testament to humanity's fascination with the stars and our unending quest for understanding the vastness of our universe. Thanks to Science Photo Library's preservation efforts, we can now appreciate this extraordinary work from the Library of Congress collection. It reminds us that even centuries-old maps continue to inspire awe and curiosity about our place among the cosmos.
