The Railway Interest, 1875
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a vibrant and detailed chromolithograph print capturing the essence of Edward William Watkin, an influential figure in British railway history. Created by renowned artist Carlo Pellegrini for Vanity Fair, this portrait showcases Watkin's prominent role as a railway promoter and politician during the 19th century. With his distinguished sideboards and sideburns, Watkin exudes authority and sophistication. As one of the directors on major railways such as Great Eastern Railway, Great Western Railway, South Eastern Railway, Metropolitan Railway, and Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, he earned the title "The Second Railway King". His dedication to advancing transportation infrastructure was further demonstrated through his chairmanship positions. Not only did Watkin excel in the realm of railways but also in politics. Serving as a Member of Parliament for Stockport from 1864 to 1868 and later representing Hythe in Kent from 1874 to 1895 showcased his commitment to public service. Knighted in 1868 and made a baronet in 1880, these honors reflected his significant contributions to society. Carlo Pellegrini's caricature-like style adds a touch of humor while still capturing Watkin's esteemed stature. This print serves as both an artistic representation of an influential statesman and a historical record commemorating the achievements that shaped Britain's transport landscape during this era.
