21st May 1955: A street in the Scottish holiday resort of Rothesay on the island of Bute. Rothesay used to be known as Glasgow-by-the-sea but improved transport links have encouraged visitors from further afield, which has boosted the resorts popularity and the local economy. The car ferry, which crosses the Kyles of Bute from Wemyss Bay, booked eight vehicles at the Spring Bank Holiday in 1953 andby 1955 the figure had risen to 212. The resort provides traditional entertainments such as the Winter Gardens, the Pavilion Ballrooms and Punch & Judy shows on the beach, as well as three cinemas. Rothesay Road - Capturing the Charm of a Scottish Holiday Resort in 1955
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the vibrant streets of Rothesay, a picturesque holiday resort nestled on the beautiful island of Bute. Known as "Glasgow-by-the-sea" in earlier years, Rothesay has witnessed a remarkable transformation thanks to improved transport links that have attracted visitors from far and wide. The image showcases a bustling street scene, with couples strolling hand-in-hand along the sidewalk. The timeless lampposts illuminate their path as they explore this charming town's offerings. In the background, we catch glimpses of an elegant church spire rising above quaint buildings, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. Rothesay's popularity is evident not only through its thriving local economy but also by its increasing number of car ferry bookings. From just eight vehicles during Spring Bank Holiday in 1953, it soared to an impressive 212 by 1955 – testament to its allure for tourists seeking traditional entertainments like Punch & Judy shows on the beach or indulging in cultural experiences at Winter Gardens and Pavilion Ballrooms. Through this archival photograph captured by John Murray for Picture Post magazine in 1955, we are transported back to an era where simplicity met charm amidst Scotland's stunning landscapes. It serves as a reminder that even then, Rothesay was already leaving an indelible mark on those who ventured there – forever etching itself into Scotland's rich tapestry of history and culture.
