Prince Arthur (1850-1942) was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was named after one of his godfathers, Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, on whose 81st birthday he was born.
In 1879, Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. She was the daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl and a great-niece of Kaiser Wilhelm I (another of Arthurs godfathers). To mark the occasion, he was appointed colonel of the 3rd Zieten Hussars, a regiment of the Imperial German Army. From 1904, he served as its colonel-in-chief and in 1906 he was appointed a field marshal in the German Army.
Although purely ceremonial, these appointments reflected his familyAs close German ties. His mother, Queen Victoria, was the last British monarch from the House of Hanover. Through Prince ArthurAs father, Prince Albert, he was also Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.); eNational Army Museum; German, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a tunic worn by HRH The Duke of Connaught, who served in the German Army as part of the 3rd von Zieten Hussars before 1914. The tunic is beautifully crafted and adorned with intricate details, reflecting the regal status and military prowess of its wearer. HRH The Duke of Connaught, Prince Arthur, was born in 1850 as the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Named after Field Marshal Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, he had strong ties to Germany through his family connections. In 1879, he married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, further solidifying these bonds. To commemorate their marriage, Prince Arthur was appointed colonel of the prestigious 3rd Zieten Hussars regiment within the Imperial German Army. His role expanded over time to include serving as its colonel-in-chief from 1904 and being appointed a field marshal in the German Army in 1906. While these appointments were largely ceremonial in nature, they symbolized Prince Arthur's close relationship with Germany due to his familial background. As Queen Victoria was the last British monarch from the House of Hanover and his father held titles such as Duke of Saxony and Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This remarkable print offers a glimpse into an era when royal alliances shaped international relations and highlights HRH The Duke's significant position within both British and German society during this period.
