Bupropion drug molecule
Bupropion drug molecule. Computer model of bupropion, an antidepressant and smoking cessation aid, sold under a variety of brand names including Wellbutrin, Zyban and Buproban. As an antidepressant it acts as a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. This prevents the uptake of these neurotransmitters back into the presynaptic cell, which results in elevated extracellular levels. As a nicotinic antagonist it inhibits nicotine from acting on the nicotine receptors in the brain, therefore preventing it from having a rewarding and enjoyable effect. Atoms, represented as tubes, are colour-coded: carbon (yellow), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (blue), chlorine (green) and oxygen (red)
