St Michael ad Bladum
St Michael ad Bladum or St Michael-le-Querne. A parish church in the Farringdon within ward. It was destroyed in the Great Fire of London of 1666 and not rebuilt. The name is apparently a reference to a quern-stone as there was a corn market in the churchyard. Date: 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
St Michael-le-Querne, also known as St Michael ad Bladum, was a historic parish church located in the Farringdon within ward of London. The name of the church is believed to be derived from the Old English word 'blad,' meaning a quern-stone, and 'michael,' referring to the archangel. This moniker may have been a nod to the corn market that once thrived in the churchyard. The church, which dates back to the medieval period, was unfortunately destroyed during the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666. The fire, which began in a bakery on Pudding Lane, spread rapidly throughout the city, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. St Michael-le-Querne was one of many structures that were lost during this tragic event. Despite the destruction of the church, the name and history of St Michael-le-Querne lived on. The site where the church once stood is now marked by a plaque commemorating its existence. The image before you is a 19th-century print depicting the church as it may have appeared before its unfortunate demise. The intricate details of the Gothic architecture, the tall spire reaching towards the heavens, and the peaceful scene of the churchyard are all captured in this beautiful representation. The loss of St Michael-le-Querne was a significant one, not just for the parishioners who worshipped there, but for the rich history of London as well. The church stood as a testament to the city's past, a reminder of the traditions and stories that shaped its identity. Today, the memory of St Michael-le-Querne continues to live on, as a cherished piece of London's history.
