EDITORS COMMENTS
Stephen I, also known as Stephen of Blois, is depicted in this striking profile portrait, donning a helmet and armour. Born in 1096, Stephen was the Count of Blois and Chartres before ascending to the English throne in 1135 following the death of King Henry I. His reign, which lasted until 1154, was marked by instability and conflict, including the Anarchy, a civil war between Stephen and Empress Matilda, Henry I's daughter, over the succession. Stephen's French heritage, as a member of the House of Blois, set him apart from the English nobility and contributed to his unpopularity among some. However, he was a capable military leader and successfully defended England against external threats, including invasions by the Scots and the Welsh. Despite his military prowess, Stephen's reign was marred by internal strife and political instability. The Anarchy, which lasted from 1135 to 1153, saw the country torn apart by conflict between Stephen and Matilda, with control of different regions shifting back and forth between them. The conflict ended with the death of Matilda's husband, Emperor Henry V, in 1125, and Stephen's recognition of Matilda's son, Henry II, as his heir. Stephen is shown here in a solemn and regal pose, with a determined expression on his face. His helmet and armour underscore his status as a warrior king, ready to defend his realm against all threats. The intricate details of the armour and the realistic rendering of Stephen's face attest to the skill of the artist who created this image. This portrait provides a glimpse into the image of Stephen I as it was perceived during his reign and offers a fascinating insight into the visual representation of medieval monarchs. The portrait is a reminder of the complexities of the medieval period and the challenges faced by rulers in maintaining control over their realms.
