A Spring Shower, 1790s-1804. Creator: Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (Italian, 1727-1804)
A Spring Shower, 1790s-1804. Among the treasures of the Cleveland museums drawing collection are nine sheets from Tiepolos series on the life of Pulchinello, known by its Italian title, I Divertimenti per li Regazzi (Enjoyments for Children). Tiepolo made 104 drawings featuring the Pulchinello character from the Italian tradition of popular theater known as the commedia dellarte. Yet the stories Tiepolo tells with the character are of his own strikingly modern invention. This exceptional drawing depicts a group from the back, walking in a spring shower that literally drips down the white paper. Despite the melancholy tone of the scene, an element of amusement exists in the contrast of shapes among the figures and our inability to see their faces, a playful motif that might suggest a scene from the annual Venetian celebration known as carnevale

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's masterpiece, "A Spring Shower". Part of his renowned series on the life of Pulchinello, these drawings are a treasure within the Cleveland museums drawing collection. Tiepolo, an Italian artist from the 18th century, created 104 drawings featuring the beloved Pulchinello character from commedia dell'arte. In this particular drawing, we witness a group walking through a spring shower as droplets cascade down onto the white paper. The scene exudes a melancholic tone but also carries an element of amusement. The figures are depicted from behind, their faces hidden from view, adding to the playful motif that ties into Venetian carnevale celebrations. Tiepolo's innovative storytelling shines through in this exceptional piece. His unique interpretation of Pulchinello and his ability to convey emotion through contrasting shapes is truly remarkable. With pen and brown ink combined with brush and brown wash over black chalk, Tiepolo brings life to each stroke. As viewers gaze upon this print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, they can appreciate not only Tiepolo's artistic genius but also his contribution to Italian heritage art. It serves as a reminder that even centuries later, his work continues to captivate audiences worldwide with its timeless beauty and modern sensibility.
