Saint Nicholas of Bari, 1472. Creator: Carlo Crivelli (Italian, 1430 / 35-1495)
Saint Nicholas of Bari, 1472. Saint Nicolas of Bari, patron saint of children, sailors, and travelers, and the prototype of Father Christmas, was bishop of Myra (Lycia) in Asia Minor during the AD 300s. His remains were said to have been taken to Bari in Italy during the 11th century. The saint is shown vested as bishop in an elaborately embroidered cope, fastened with a morse, and holding a crosier. By the mid-1400s, most Florentine artists had stopped using gold backgrounds in their pictures, preferring instead naturalistic backgrounds of landscapes and blue skies. However, elsewhere in Italy gold-ground painting remained popular, as in this painting by Crivelli, a a painter of conservative Late Gothic decorative sensibility, who spent his early years in the Veneto where he absorbed influences from the Vivarini, Squarcione, and Mantegna. By 1458 he left the Veneto and was never to return; he spent most of the remainder of his career in the March of Ancona, where he developed a distinctive personal style that makes a contrast to his Venetian contemporary Giovanni Bellini

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Saint Nicholas of Bari, a revered figure known as the patron saint of children, sailors, and travelers. Created by Carlo Crivelli in 1472, this artwork depicts Saint Nicholas dressed in an ornate bishop's attire adorned with intricate embroidery. Holding a crosier symbolizing his role as bishop, he exudes an aura of wisdom and benevolence. The background of this painting stands out with its shimmering gold hue, a characteristic feature often found in Italian art during that era. While many Florentine artists had moved towards more naturalistic landscapes by the mid-1400s, Crivelli remained loyal to the traditional style popular elsewhere in Italy. Crivelli's artistic journey was shaped by his early years spent absorbing influences from renowned painters such as Vivarini, Squarcione, and Mantegna while residing in Veneto. However, he later ventured to the March of Ancona where he developed his distinctive personal style that set him apart from his Venetian contemporary Giovanni Bellini. This remarkable print not only captures the beauty and craftsmanship of Crivelli's work but also pays homage to Saint Nicholas' enduring legacy. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of both the historical significance and cultural impact that this beloved saint continues to have on our lives.
