George Barbier (October 10, 1882 - March 16, 1932) was one of the great French illustrators of the early 20th century. By 1911 he was at the forefront of his profession with commissions to design theater and ballet costumes, to illustrate books, and to produce haute couture fashion illustrations. For the next 20 years Barbier led a group from the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He died in 1932 at the very pinnacle of his success. Fashion is a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behavior and the newest creations of textile designers. Prior to the mid-19th century, most clothing was custom-made. It was handmade for individuals, either as home production or on order from dressmakers and tailors. By the beginning of the 20th century, with the rise of new technologies such as the sewing machine, the development of the factory system of production, and the emergence of department stores, clothing had increasingly come to be mass-produced in standard sizes and sold at fixed prices

Caption: "Fumme (Ablaze) fashion plate by Barbier, 1920. George Barbier (October 10,1882 - March 16,1932) was one of the great French illustrators of the early 20th century. This print showcases George Barbier's exquisite talent as a fashion illustrator during the roaring twenties. Titled 'Fumme (Ablaze)', this artwork captures the essence of high society glamour and elegance that defined this era. Barbier's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke, as he meticulously portrays a woman adorned in an opulent evening gown embellished with intricate patterns and shimmering sequins. The model exudes confidence and sophistication while striking a pose against a backdrop reminiscent of art deco architecture. As one of France's most sought-after illustrators, Barbier revolutionized fashion illustration by bringing it into mainstream culture through his collaborations with theaters, ballets, book publishers, and prestigious fashion houses. His work not only captured trends but also set new standards for beauty and style. Fashion itself has evolved over time; once solely reserved for bespoke tailoring or homemade garments before industrialization took hold in clothing production methods. With advancements like sewing machines and department stores emerging in the early twentieth century came mass-produced clothing available at fixed prices. This remarkable print serves as both a testament to George Barbier's artistic genius and an iconic representation of an era where fashion became accessible to all". Image credit: Alamy
