Goubet submarine, 1880s
Goubet submarine, 19th-century artwork. This early submarine, built by the French inventor Claude Goubet in 1881, was designed for two people. It was battery-powered, had a Siemens electric motor for its propeller, and had a light mounted on the front. The operators could see through small glass windows using a set of prisms to see up, down and around. The first Goubet submarine was 5 metres long and weighed 6 tonnes. It was tested in the river Seine in Paris, France, but proved to be unstable in the water. Artwork from the 5th volume (first period of 1890) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the Goubet submarine, an early 19th-century invention by French inventor Claude Goubet. Created in 1881, this pioneering vessel was designed to accommodate two people and boasted impressive features for its time. Powered by a Siemens electric motor, the battery-operated submarine also had a front-mounted light and small glass windows with prisms that allowed operators to see in all directions. Measuring 5 meters long and weighing 6 tonnes, the first Goubet submarine underwent testing in the iconic river Seine of Paris, France. However, despite its innovative design, it proved to be unstable in water. This historical illustration from La Science Illustree's fifth volume (1890) offers us a glimpse into the early days of engineering and technological advancements. The image captures the spirit of exploration and human ingenuity during this era as inventors like Claude Goubet pushed boundaries to develop groundbreaking transportation technologies. The monochrome artwork beautifully depicts a European male engineer launching his creation into the water while onlookers observe with curiosity. This piece serves as a reminder of how far we have come in terms of electrical-powered vessels since those pioneering days. It is an homage to inventors and pioneers who paved the way for modern submarines that now navigate our oceans with ease.
