Alcock Arthur Landing Marconi Shortly Whitten Wireless 1919 Railcar
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken on June 15, 1919, aviators Arthur Whitten Brown (right) and John Alcock are seen in a railcar on the Marconi Light Railway, shortly after their successful transatlantic flight. The railcar transported the intrepid explorers from the landing site to the nearby wireless station, where they sent the first radiogram announcing their achievement to the world. Arthur Whitten Brown and John Alcock made aviation history on June 14, 1919, when they completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight from Newfoundland, Canada to Ireland, in their modified Vickers Vimy biplane. The daring duo faced numerous challenges during their 16-hour, 28-minute journey, including extreme cold, fatigue, and navigational difficulties. Upon their arrival at Cove Field in County Meath, Ireland, they were greeted with great fanfare and celebration. The railcar ride to the wireless station allowed them to share their incredible story with the world, sending a message to the Marconi Company's headquarters in London, which was then relayed to newspapers across the globe. The Marconi Light Railway was a privately owned railway that ran from the Marconi wireless station at Baldonnel, County Kildare, to the village of Bray, County Wicklow, in Ireland. It was used primarily to transport supplies and personnel to the wireless station, but on this momentous day, it played a crucial role in spreading the news of Alcock and Brown's historic achievement.
