1882 1932 1945 32nd Delano Election Franklin Roosevelt Year
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, is seen in the year of his election, 1932. The image captures a determined and resolute Roosevelt, who would go on to lead the country through some of its most challenging times. Born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York, Roosevelt was a scion of one of America's most prominent political families. He served in the New York State Senate and as Assistant Secretary of the Navy before being stricken with polio in 1921, which left him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite this setback, Roosevelt refused to let his disability define him and continued to pursue a career in politics. Roosevelt's presidency began on March 4, 1933, at a time when the country was in the throes of the Great Depression. Unemployment was rampant, and the economy was in shambles. In his inaugural address, Roosevelt famously declared, "This is pre-eminently the time to act." He went on to implement a series of bold programs and reforms, collectively known as the New Deal, which provided relief to millions of Americans and helped to lift the country out of the Depression. Roosevelt's presidency also saw the United States' entry into World War II following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Under his leadership, the country mobilized its resources and industry to support the war effort, ultimately emerging as a global superpower. Roosevelt served four terms as president, the only American president to do so, before his death on April 12, 1945. He is remembered as a transformative figure in American history, whose leadership and vision helped to shape the country's future. This photograph, taken in the year of his election, is a poignant reminder of the pivotal role he played in American history.
