Battle of Hohenlinden, 3 December, 1800
Battle of Hohenlinden, 3rd December, 1800. As Frances General Jean Moreau was advancing towards Munich with 100, 000 troops, Archduke John of Austria was hoping to use his 130, 000 men to outflank him and cut off his supply lines. With the French seeming to be trying to do the same, John changed his plan and instead drove straight down the main road to Munich near Hohenlinden. Unfortunately, for the Austrians, he ran full into the waiting French who had taken strong defensive positions straddling the road. Excellent work on the flanks by General Ney, General Grouchy and General Richepanse shattered the Austrians, who fled. Moreau lost some 5000 killed and wounded, while John had to report 18, 000 casualties. Austria signed an armistice three weeks later

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intensity and chaos of the Battle of Hohenlinden, a pivotal moment in history during the Napoleonic Wars. As General Jean Moreau led his formidable French army towards Munich, Archduke John of Austria devised a plan to outflank him with his own sizable force. However, fate had other plans. In a twist of events, the French forces strategically positioned themselves along the main road near Hohenlinden, blocking any advancement by the Austrians. The engraving showcases the power and determination of both sides as they clashed on this fateful day. The image highlights not only the soldiers but also their trusty steeds that played an essential role in warfare during this era. The horses gallop across the battlefield with unwavering loyalty to their riders, adding an element of movement and energy to this black-and-white monochrome print. The aftermath was devastating for Archduke John's troops who suffered heavy casualties while attempting to break through French defenses. This resounding victory for France ultimately led to an armistice being signed three weeks later. As we gaze upon this historical artwork created by Anon (creator) under Napoleon Bonaparte I's reign, we are reminded of the immense sacrifices made by those who fought bravely on both sides. It serves as a testament to human resilience and valor amidst one of Europe's most turbulent periods - forever etching its place in our collective memory.
