EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the lives of His Royal Highness The Duke of Windsor and Mrs. Wallis Warfield, taken the day before their wedding on June 3, 1937, at the Chateau de Cande near Tours in France. The Duke, formerly known as King Edward VIII of England, had abdicated the throne in December 1936, following his decision to marry the American socialite, Wallis Warfield Simpson, despite opposition from the Church of England and the British government due to her previous marriage and Jewish ancestry. In this image, the couple exudes an air of quiet determination and happiness, as they prepare to embark on their new life together. The Duke, dressed in a formal suit, gazes intently at his bride-to-be, while Wallis, wearing a stunning two-piece crepe dress in the powder-blue hue that would come to be known as 'Wallis blue,' looks radiant and confident in her sapphire and diamond jewellery and a halo hat of the same colour. The intimate setting of the music room at Chateau de Cande, with its ornate furnishings and grand fireplace, adds to the sense of romance and history in this poignant scene. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor's wedding was a highly publicized event, with the couple facing significant controversy and scrutiny from the British public and media. However, they remained devoted to each other throughout their unconventional and often tumultuous marriage, which lasted until the Duke's death in 1972. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their enduring love story and the challenges they faced in the face of adversity.
