Body Daniel Genoa Heart Heaven Soul 15th
EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the moment of the death of Daniel O'Connell, the legendary Irish political figure and champion of Catholic emancipation, on May 15, 1847. The photograph, titled "Death of Daniel O'Connell in Genoa," shows O'Connell lying in his deathbed in the Italian city of Genoa, where he had gone in search of better health. The room is filled with mourners, including his wife and children, as well as Irish and Italian dignitaries. Despite his death in exile, the Irish people saw O'Connell as their hero and a symbol of their struggle for freedom and self-determination. His heartfelt wish was to be buried in Ireland, but due to the political climate of the time, his body was not allowed to be repatriated. Instead, his heart was removed and interred in the Protestant St. Michan's Church in Dublin, while his body was laid to rest in the Protestant Mount Jerome Cemetery in Dublin. However, the Irish people believed that O'Connell's soul was in heaven, and this belief is reflected in the inscription on the photograph: "His heart at Rome, his body in Ireland, and his soul in heaven." O'Connell's legacy lived on, inspiring generations of Irish nationalists and freedom fighters. His death marked the end of an era, but his spirit continued to inspire the Irish people in their quest for independence and self-determination. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the life and times of Daniel O'Connell, a man who dedicated his life to the cause of Irish freedom and left an indelible mark on Irish history.
