EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, showcases two fascinating bird species native to Asia - the Cuckoo Roller (Leptosomus discolor) and the Sunda Coucal (Centropus nigrorufus). The image, published by F.G. Levrault in Paris between 1816 and 1830, was illustrated by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and engraved by Guyard under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The Cuckoo Roller, with its distinctive black and white plumage, is a member of the roller family, known for its unique method of nesting - it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, allowing the host species to raise its young. The Sunda Coucal, on the other hand, is a vulnerable species of coucal, characterized by its black and rufous plumage. Both birds are native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The intricate details of the birds' feathers and anatomical features are beautifully captured in this historical illustration. The use of the stipple engraving technique adds depth and texture to the image, making it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history art. The illustration is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists and engravers of the time, who meticulously documented the natural world for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
