Communist Inaugurate Kremlin Lenin Moscow 1919 Platten
EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the momentous occasion of the inauguration of the Third Communist International, also known as the Comintern, at the Kremlin in Moscow on March 18, 1919. The three men in the foreground are the key figures present at this founding event: Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Soviet Union, Paul Levi of Germany, and Adolf J. J. Friedrich Platten of Switzerland. Lenin, dressed in a simple suit and holding a document in his hand, stands at the center of the image, exuding authority and determination. To his left is Paul Levi, a German revolutionary and the first chairman of the Comintern's Executive Committee. To Lenin's right is Adolf J. J. Friedrich Platten, a Swiss socialist and the first vice-chairman of the Comintern. The Comintern was established to coordinate international communist activities and to promote the spread of communist revolutions around the world. Lenin believed that the success of the Russian Revolution could not be sustained without the support of the international working class, and the Comintern was his response to this need. The inauguration of the Comintern took place in the historic setting of the Kremlin, the fortified complex at the heart of Moscow that had served as the residence of the Russian tsars for centuries. The grandeur of the Kremlin walls and towers provides a striking contrast to the simple attire and serious expressions of the men gathered in the courtyard. This photograph is a testament to the international nature of the communist movement and the determination of its leaders to spread the revolution beyond Russian borders. It is a powerful reminder of the historical significance of the Comintern and the role it played in shaping the course of the 20th century.
