St Jeromes Dream, c1600. Artist: Orazio Borgianni
St Jeromes Dream, c1600. St Jerome (c340-420), one of the four great Fathers of the Christian church who translated the Old Testament from Hebrew into Latin and who worked on the translation of Gospels into Latin, dreamed he was in the presence of God. He was asked to identify himself, to which he replied that he was a follower of Jesus. God told him he was a liar and that he was a Ciceronian. After this, Jerome ceased reading Latin authors and turned all his energies to translating the Bible. The artist shows the Christ enthroned, the Virgin Mary looking down on Jerome being beaten by angels. From the collection of the Louvre, Paris

EDITORS COMMENTS
St Jerome's Dream, captured in this print by Orazio Borgianni, takes us back to the 17th century and immerses us in a world of faith, devotion, and divine intervention. St Jerome, known as one of the great Fathers of the Christian church, is depicted here experiencing a profound encounter with God. In his dream, St Jerome finds himself before the presence of God who challenges his identity as a follower of Jesus. The intensity of this moment is beautifully portrayed through the artist's skillful use of dramatic lighting and intricate details. We see Christ enthroned while the Virgin Mary gazes down upon St Jerome who is being chastised by angels. The punishment inflicted upon him serves as a turning point in his life. Previously engrossed in reading Latin authors like Cicero, he now devotes all his energy to translating sacred texts such as the Old Testament into Latin. This transformative experience showcases both St Jerome's ascetic nature and unwavering belief in Christianity. Borgianni's masterful brushstrokes bring forth an atmosphere that evokes both awe and fear within viewers. The violence depicted through angelic attacks highlights not only St Jerome's inner struggle but also emphasizes the spiritual battles faced by believers throughout history. This remarkable artwork from the collection at Louvre Museum Paris invites contemplation on themes such as faith, religion, and personal transformation. It reminds us that even saints face moments of doubt and must overcome obstacles on their path towards enlightenment.
