City walls in Essaouira
City walls in Essaouira. Essaouira is a city in the western Moroccan economic region of Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz, on the Atlantic coast. The city was known in the time of 11th-century geographer al-Bakri and, as he reported, was called Sidi Megdoul. In the 16th-century, a corruption of this name became known to the Portuguese as Mogador or Mogadore. The Berber and Arabic names mean the wall, a reference to the fortress walls that originally enclosed the city. The Medina of Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage listed city, an example of a late 18th-century fortified town, as transferred to North Africa by European colonists. The medina is home to many small arts and crafts businesses, notably cabinet making and thuya wood-carving (using roots of the Tetraclinis tree), both of which have been practised in Essaouira for centuries. Essaouira remains one of the major fishing harbours of Morocco.
This town was the setting for several scenes of the popular Game of Thrones and as Othello version of Orson Welles

EDITORS COMMENTS
The ancient city walls of Essaouira stand tall and proud, a testament to the rich history and culture of this Moroccan coastal town. Originally known as Sidi Megdoul in the 11th century, the city was later called Mogador by Portuguese colonists due to its fortress-like walls. The Medina of Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a prime example of late 18th-century architecture brought to North Africa by European influences.
Within these walls lies a bustling community of artisans practicing traditional crafts such as cabinet making and thuya wood-carving, traditions that have been passed down for generations. The narrow streets are filled with the sights and sounds of daily life, from fishermen hauling in their catch at the bustling harbor to locals going about their daily routines.
Essaouira's unique charm has captured the hearts of many, including filmmakers who have chosen this picturesque town as the backdrop for scenes in popular TV shows like Game of Thrones and films like Orson Welles' Othello. As you gaze upon this stunning print capturing the essence of Essaouira's city walls, you can't help but be transported back in time to an era where history comes alive amidst the salty sea breeze.
