1844 Baronet Cricket Fitzgerald Kerry Knight Maurice Valencia Vanity
EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Maurice Fitzgerald, 20th Knight of Kerry and 2nd Baronet of Valencia (1844-1916), is depicted in this striking portrait photograph from the pages of Vanity Fair. Born on February 2, 1844, in Ireland, Fitzgerald was a prominent figure in the social and political circles of his time. He was the eldest son of Sir Maurice Fitzgerald, 19th Knight of Kerry and 1st Baronet of Valencia, and his wife, Lady Catherine Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald's title, "Knight of Kerry," is a hereditary honor that can be traced back to the 16th century. The Fitzgerald family, one of the oldest and most distinguished in Ireland, held vast estates in the county of Kerry. Sir Maurice's lineage can be traced back to Gerald FitzGerald, the 13th Earl of Desmond, who was executed in 1583 for his rebellion against Queen Elizabeth I. Despite his noble background, Sir Maurice was known for his love of sports and adventure. He was an accomplished cricketer and played for the Gentlemen of Ireland team in the late 1860s. In 1869, he embarked on a journey to India, where he served as aide-de-camp to the Viceroy, Lord Lytton. He later joined the Indian Civil Service and rose to the rank of Deputy Commissioner. Sir Maurice returned to Ireland in 1883 and took up residence at his family seat, Valencia Castle. He was an active member of the local community and served as High Sheriff of Kerry in 1886. He was also a generous patron of the arts and supported various charitable causes. Sir Maurice Fitzgerald passed away on March 13, 1916, at the age of 72. He is buried in the family vault at the Old Abbey, Tralee, County Kerry. This photograph, taken during Sir Maurice's later years, captures the essence of a man who led a life filled with adventure, achievement, and distinction.
