EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Short S.16/1 Scion 1 G-ACUW (msn S.775) at Rochester Airport in the 1930s. The third production Scion 1, G-ACUW, is distinguished by its low-set engine nacelles and early-style windscreen. After undergoing flight testing and demonstrations of scheduled services between Rochester and Southend airports, this Shorts aircraft was sold to Atlantic Coast Air Services Ltd. in Barnstaple, Devon, in 1935. G-ACUW remained at Barnstaple, providing local transportation and serving Lundy Island until 1938. In May 1940, the aircraft was impressed into the Royal Air Force (RAF). Tragically, on 1 November 1940, G-ACUW spun in on approach to Ringway Airport, marking the end of its aviation career. The Short S.16/1 Scion 1 was a significant aircraft during the interwar period, offering a modern and efficient solution for air transportation needs. This photograph captures a glimpse into the history of aviation, showcasing the grace and elegance of this vintage aircraft during its time at Rochester Airport.
