EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne de Bretagne: The Queen Consort of Charles VIII and Louis XII of France (1477-1514) This exquisite portrait captures the enigmatic and powerful presence of Anne de Bretagne, the Duchess of Brittany, who became the Queen Consort of France twice, first to Charles VIII in 1491 and later to Louis XII in 1499. Anne was born in 1477 in Brittany, a duchy in the northwest of France that was a separate kingdom at the time. She was the daughter of Francis II, Duke of Brittany, and Marguerite of Foix. Anne's beauty and intelligence were renowned throughout Europe, and she was a valuable political pawn in the complex web of alliances and power struggles that marked the late Middle Ages. Her first marriage to Charles VIII was arranged to strengthen the ties between Brittany and France, and the union proved to be a successful one. Anne bore Charles a son, the future King Francis II of Brittany, before the king's untimely death in 1498. Following Charles' death, Anne was married to Louis XII, who was 17 years her junior. The marriage was a strategic one, as it allowed Louis to gain control of Brittany and its rich resources. Anne, who was known for her intelligence and shrewd political acumen, proved to be a valuable ally and advisor to her second husband. She continued to wield significant power even after Louis' death in 1514, and her influence extended beyond the borders of France. This portrait, which dates from the late 15th or early 16th century, captures Anne's regal beauty and poise. She is depicted wearing a richly decorated gown and a headdress adorned with pearls and precious stones. Her expression is calm and serene, reflecting the inner strength and intelligence that made Anne de Bretagne one of the most powerful and influential women of her time.
