1635 1719 Aubigne Francoise Madame Maintenon Scarron Secret Widow Pingret

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon and Madame de Pingré (1635-1719). Born into a noble but impoverished family, she rose to become one of the most influential women in the court of King Louis XIV of France. Françoise d'Aubigné first gained notoriety as the widow of poet Paul Scarron. However, her most significant relationship was her clandestine marriage to Louis XIV in 1660, which remained a well-kept secret for over 20 years. As the king's morganatic consort, she was granted the title of Marquise de Maintenon and the château of Maintenon, where she established a religious community for girls, known as the "Petites Sœurs de la Présentation de Marie." Despite her humble beginnings, Madame de Maintenon's influence over the king and the court was immense. She was instrumental in the education of the royal children, including the future Louis XV, and played a key role in the political and religious affairs of the kingdom. Her legacy extended beyond the court, as she was also a prolific writer, publishing works on spirituality and education. This portrait, likely taken during her later years, reveals the wisdom and strength of character that defined Madame de Maintenon. Her piercing gaze and regal bearing speak to her intelligence and determination, while the delicate lace collar and intricately embroidered gown reflect the opulence of the French court. The portrait serves as a reminder of the remarkable woman who, through her intelligence, strength, and determination, rose from obscurity to become a powerful and influential figure in the history of France.
