EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Arrowroot plant, Maranta arundinacea, as it was illustrated in Dr. Willibald Artus's comprehensive Handbook of all Medical-Pharmaceutical Plants, published in Jena, Germany, in 1876. Arrowroot, native to the tropical regions of the Americas, is a perennial herb with long, narrow, arrow-shaped leaves and white or pink tuberous roots. The plant was highly valued by indigenous peoples for its edible roots, which were ground into a starch used to make a porridge or thickener for various dishes. The medicinal properties of Arrowroot were also recognized by traditional healers and European physicians. The starchy substance was used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, and other gastrointestinal disorders due to its ability to absorb water and form a protective coating in the intestines. The plant was also believed to have anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. This exquisite botanical illustration captures the intricate details of the Arrowroot plant, from the delicate veining on its leaves to the tuberous roots at its base. The meticulous handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing the plant to life and showcasing its beauty and importance in both traditional and medical contexts.
