Eustace Rogers builds coracles but the demand for this ancient form of transport has fallen in the past few hundred years. So 52 year old Eustace - the last of his kind in England - has switched from the very old to the very new and taken a job at the huge power station at Ironbridge in Shropshire. He commutes, of course, by coracle - three miles on the River Seven. Its ideal for reflective lunch breaks and there are no no parking problems either. March 1967

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see Eustace Rogers, a skilled coracle builder, navigating the River Seven in Shropshire. Eustace's craftsmanship harks back to an ancient form of transport that has gradually lost its demand over the past few centuries. As the last remaining coracle builder in England, he has adapted to changing times and embraced modernity by taking up a job at the massive Ironbridge power station. Every day, Eustace commutes to work in his trusty coracle, rowing three miles along the serene river. This unconventional mode of transportation not only reflects his deep connection with tradition but also offers him moments of tranquility during reflective lunch breaks on the water. Unlike those who struggle with parking woes, Eustace faces no such problems as he glides effortlessly through ripples and currents. The photograph captures both ancient and modern elements harmoniously coexisting within a single frame. The towering chimneys of Ironbridge symbolize progress and industrialization while contrasting against Eustace's timeless presence donning a flat cap. With sandwich in hand, he embodies resilience and adaptability amidst societal changes. Taken in March 1967 during the vibrant era of the 1960s, this image encapsulates fifty years' worth of history within its pixels. It serves as a poignant reminder that even as old traditions fade away under evolving circumstances, there are individuals like Eustace Rogers who carry their legacy forward while embracing new opportunities that come their way.
