Saint Paul the Hermit, c. 1662-1664. Creator: Mattia Preti (Italian, 1613-1699)

Saint Paul the Hermit, c. 1662-1664. After training in Rome in the 1630s and 1640s, Preti went to Naples where he continued working in a mode inspired by the work of Caravaggio. In this painting, dramatic lighting and intense naturalism depict the intersection of the heavenly and earthly realms. According to Catholic tradition, Saint Paul the Hermit fled into the desert to escape persecution from the Romans in the third century, and is revered as the first of many hermit saints. A raven brought Saint Paul a half a loaf of bread daily, which enabled him to survive to the age of 113 years. Preti depicted the saint looking heavenward in appreciation and awe of his heavenly provider. The hermit saint is clothed only in a rough woven cloth, intended to increase the saints suffering and thus draw him closer spiritually to Christ

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the masterpiece "Saint Paul the Hermit" by Mattia Preti, an Italian artist from the 17th century. Preti's training in Rome and subsequent work in Naples allowed him to develop a style heavily influenced by Caravaggio. In this painting, he skillfully employs dramatic lighting and intense naturalism to depict the meeting point of heaven and earth. According to Catholic tradition, Saint Paul the Hermit sought refuge in the desert during Roman persecution in the third century. Regarded as one of many hermit saints, he survived for an astonishing 113 years with only half a loaf of bread brought daily by a raven - his heavenly provider. In this artwork, Preti captures Saint Paul's profound gratitude and awe as he gazes towards heaven. The saint is portrayed wearing nothing but rough woven cloth, symbolizing his willingness to endure suffering for spiritual closeness with Christ. The texture adds depth and realism to this poignant representation. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this oil on canvas painting exemplifies Preti's mastery of technique and ability to convey emotion through artistry. This print allows viewers to appreciate every intricate detail while immersing themselves in the rich heritage of Italian art history. Heritage Images presents this remarkable piece as part of their collection dedicated to preserving cultural treasures for generations to come.
