Captain James Cook taking possession of New South Wales in the name of the British Crown, 1770. James Cook (1728-1779), English explorer, navigator and hydrographer, made three voyages of discovery. On the first he observed the transit of Venus and charted the coasts of New Zealand and eastern Australia, claiming them for Britain, and on the second he explored the Southern Ocean. The main objective of his last voyage was to find a northern sea passage between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. He was killed when a fight broke out with natives in Hawaii

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment when Captain James Cook claimed New South Wales in the name of the British Crown in 1770. Captain Cook, an English explorer and navigator, is depicted here during his first voyage of discovery. Known for his remarkable achievements, he observed the transit of Venus and meticulously charted the coasts of New Zealand and eastern Australia, establishing British ownership over these territories. In this image, we see Captain Cook proudly holding a flag as he stands on Australian soil. The painting beautifully portrays the significance of exploration and colonialism during this era. It symbolizes Britain's naval power and its quest for new lands across oceans. Tragically, Captain Cook's life was cut short during his third voyage when a conflict erupted with natives in Hawaii. Nevertheless, his contributions to navigation and scientific discoveries remain unparalleled. This print not only commemorates Captain James Cook but also highlights the complexities surrounding imperialism and indigenous cultures. It serves as a reminder of our shared history while prompting us to reflect on past actions that have shaped our present world.
