Days Motor Under Way, November 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Days Motor Under Way, November 1911, (1913). Bernard Day passing Inacessible Island with his sledge pulled by a motor tractor, laden with food and supplies. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Days Motor Under Way, November 1911" captures a pivotal moment in the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken by artist Herbert Ponting during the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), it showcases Bernard Day passing Inaccessible Island with his sledge pulled by a motor tractor loaded with essential supplies. Scott's ambitious mission aimed to continue scientific research and become the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Accompanied by a diverse team of experts, including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists among others, they embarked on their journey from London on 1 June 1910. However, upon reaching the South Pole on 17 January 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and dwindling supplies due to blizzards and delays along the way; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically, Scott and his remaining team members - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - perished at the end of March while returning from their arduous trek. Their bodies and diaries were eventually found eight months later. This poignant image serves as a reminder of their courageous efforts in pushing boundaries despite facing insurmountable challenges in one of Earth's harshest environments. It is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , documenting this historic voyage for future generations to learn from and admire.
