A Berg Calving from a Glacier at Cape Crozier, c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
A Berg Calving from a Glacier at Cape Crozier, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "A Berg Calving from a Glacier at Cape Crozier, c1911" and created by Herbert Ponting in 1913, is a poignant reminder of the final expedition led by British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Departing London on 1 June 1910, the Terra Nova Expedition aimed to continue scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. The photograph showcases an awe-inspiring moment as a massive iceberg breaks away from a glacier at Cape Crozier. The sheer magnitude of this natural phenomenon is beautifully captured by Ponting's skilled lens. It serves as a metaphor for both the grandeur and harshness of Antarctica's icy landscape that Scott and his team encountered during their arduous journey. Tragically, despite reaching their long-awaited destination on 17 January 1912, Scott and his companions discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already beaten them to the South Pole. Plagued by blizzards and dwindling supplies, they faced insurmountable challenges on their return trek. Ultimately succumbing to exhaustion and extreme weather conditions in late March, their bodies were not discovered until eight months later. This haunting image encapsulates the spirit of exploration tinged with tragedy that defined Scott's last expedition. It stands as a testament to human resilience in pursuit of knowledge amidst unforgiving environments. Preserved within "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II published in 1913, this photograph continues to evoke emotions even over a century later - reminding us of those who dared greatly but paid the ultimate price for discovery.
